Bozcaada is a 5–6 km triangular Aegean island 5 km off the mainland, reached only by a 40-minute ferry from Geyikli. The town is small, walkable and wine-focused; the beaches sit on the south coast. Two nights covers it; three if you want a beach day and a sunset run to Cape Polente. Ferries cancel in strong Lodos or Etesian winds, so build in slack.

Getting around

The town is small and walkable. From June to September dolmuşes run from the square by the castle entrance to Ayazma and Habbele beaches every 15 minutes or so, about 15 minutes; one evening service goes to Cape Polente for sunset. Island roads are paved but narrow with no side-walk. Taxis and 24-hour car rental exist; bike rental is not reliably available — check.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a Turkish holiday island; the real risks are ferry cancellations in high wind, unlit narrow roads at night, and heat in July–August. 112 covers everything.
  • Ferries cancel in southerly Lodos or northerly Etesian gales; check the forecast before you travel and keep a buffer day.
  • Only return ferry tickets are sold, so buy your return bus ticket on the island from a local agent rather than at the mainland kiosk.
  • The north cove between the castle and the windmill is not a swimming spot.
  • Older pansiyons often lack A/C; sultry summer days are uncomfortable without it.
  • Red poppy syrup is a local curiosity with mild sedative compounds — do not carry it through airport security.
