The Gambia is a narrow country along the River Gambia, and most visitors stay on a short strip of Atlantic coast. Trips break on the slow ferry and roads upriver and on persistent beach touts (bumsters). The rules that apply everywhere: keep one coastal base, book upriver trips through a known operator, and agree prices before any service starts.

  • Dress modestly away from the beach: shoulders and knees covered in towns and villages.

Etiquette

  • Greetings come first: say hello and ask how someone is before any question or purchase; skipping this is rude.
  • Use your right hand to give, receive and eat; the left hand is considered unclean.
  • Ask before photographing people, and do not photograph police, the military, airports or government buildings.
  • The country is mostly Muslim; during Ramadan avoid eating and drinking in public in daylight outside resorts.

  • Currency is the Gambian dalasi (GMD). Cards work in larger hotels; most other payments are cash.
  • Change money at banks or licensed bureaus; street changers offer worse rates and short-change tricks.

Safety

  • Bumsters (beach touts) offer guiding and friendship; a firm, polite no works, and use official guides.
  • Roads: avoid driving after dark; livestock and unlit vehicles are common.
  • Sea: strong currents on the Atlantic beaches.
  • Emergency numbers vary and may not always connect: save your hotel's, driver's and insurer's numbers, and check your government's advice page.
  • Health: see a travel clinic well before you fly about vaccinations and malaria prevention, and check whether a yellow-fever vaccination certificate is required for your passport and route, including transits.

The Gambia is surrounded by Senegal: Dakar and the Sine-Saloum are reachable overland to the north, Casamance to the south.
