Gallipoli

Give Gallipoli 2 nights: one for the old-town island at dusk, one for a Baia Verde beach day. In July–August sleep outside the centre or skip it.

Rules in force · 8Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
  • Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
  • Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
  • Italy and Malta ↗The region's headline sights run on timed tickets that sell out: book the Vatican Museums, the Colosseum, the Uffizi, the Last Supper and Malta's Hypogeum before you fix train and hotel dates.
  • Italy and Malta ↗Budget for per-night city taxes in Italy (up to about €10 a person in Rome), Malta's per-night environmental contribution, and Venice's day-visitor fee on peak days; none are included in most online room prices.
  • Italy ↗Italy is in the Schengen area. Check the entry rules for your passport on official sources; the EU's Entry/Exit System registers non-EU visitors at the first Schengen border, and further pre-travel authorisation rules are being introduced.
  • Italy ↗Historic centres are ZTL limited-traffic zones: cameras fine any unauthorised car that enters, often months later through the hire company. Park outside and walk in.
  • Italy ↗Regional train tickets bought on paper must be validated in the machine on the platform before boarding; digital tickets carry a time and need no stamping.
  • Italy ↗Venice charges day-visitors an access fee on selected peak days; check the city's official site if you are not sleeping there.

Gallipoli is a Salento summer town split in two: a limestone island old town of Baroque churches and white alleys, and a mainland strip of Corso Roma, beaches and clubs. It is a beach-and-nightlife base, not a sightseeing city. Two nights covers it; in peak season the centre is loud, crowded and expensive, so book early or stay in the suburbs.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The old town is car-free and walkable once you cross the 17th-century bridge; Corso Roma links it to the modern centre. FSE regional trains serve Gallipoli station plus two summer-only stops (Via Salento, Baia Verde), and local buses run to the beaches. A car helps for Punta Pizzo and day trips, but summer parking near the centre is scarce.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Lecce

go

Door to door: About 1–1.5 h

FSE train or car, about 1 h

Baroque centre and Roman amphitheatre; a half-day is enough.

Santa Maria di Leuca

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Car or FSE train south, about 45–60 min

Where the Ionian meets the Adriatic; lighthouse and sea caves.

Otranto

go

Door to door: About 1–1.25 h

Car via the coast, about 1 h

Adriatic harbour, mosaic cathedral floor and castle.

Torre Vado

caution

Door to door: About 1 h

Car south along the Ionian coast, about 50 min

Beach stop rather than a full day; best with a car.

Nardò and Porto Selvaggio

go

Door to door: About 40 min

Car north-west, about 30 min

Baroque centre plus a coastal nature park with pine and coves.

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Old town island

Atmosphere and walkability; small rooms, noise and parking pain in summer.

Corso Roma / modern centre

1 km from the bridge; shops, cafés and easier access to the station.

Baia Verde

Beach and club strip 3–4 km south; summer-only train stop.

Rivabella / Lido San Giovanni

Northern seafront hotels with pools; need a car or bus.

Watch out

Safety

Gallipoli is a safe, busy summer town. The real risks are heat, rip currents on exposed beaches, and club or beach-bar bills with no posted prices: ask the total before you order.
  • July–August: streets jammed at night and parking is very hard; park far out and walk.
  • Old-town accommodation is loud until late in summer; ask about windows and air conditioning.
  • Beach clubs (lidos) charge for umbrella and sunbed; free sand is limited in peak weeks.
  • Local FSE trains have a patchy reputation and some stops run only in summer: check times before relying on them.
