Gabon itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Match the route to your nights, not to a wish list. Every park leg costs a transfer day, so a short trip should touch one park only.

Seven days: land in Libreville, take two nights to reset at the seafront and the Mont-Bouët market, then fly to Port-Gentil or Omboué and continue by boat or direct charter to Loango for four lodge nights. Return to Libreville for one night before the international flight. This is the version to pick if you have one week and want the coast-and-wildlife combination the country is known for.

Ten days: run the same Loango block, come back through Libreville for a night, then take the Transgabonais train to Lopé for two or three nights of forest-savanna and mandrills before returning to the capital. The train is the reason this route works — it removes a long drive — but it can run late, so keep a Libreville night between Lopé and any international departure.

Fourteen days: start with one night at Pongara across from Libreville if you are travelling November–February for turtles, then two nights at Lambaréné for the Schweitzer hospital museum and the Ogooué lakes, then the Loango block, then Lopé. If your dates fall in July–September you get whales at Loango instead; you rarely get both in one trip.

Three weeks: add Ivindo National Park via Makokou for waterfalls and the Langoué bai, or the Batéké Plateau via Franceville at the end of the railway. Either addition needs its own transfer day in and out, so treat three weeks as the 14-day plan plus one extra park and buffer nights.

Book park legs as lodge packages. They normally include the park fee and transfers, and confirming that in writing is what keeps a tight itinerary from falling apart on arrival. Independent travel inside the parks is not the norm here.

Keep Libreville nights on both sides of every park. Domestic flights and boats are the fragile part of any Gabon itinerary, and a buffer night in the capital absorbs a delay without costing you an international connection.

Sort the paperwork before you fix dates. The e-visa is issued for Libreville airport, and US passport holders should check whether Gabon is currently issuing visas to them at all. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is worth having for park stays.

Budget around the park nights rather than the city nights; lodge nights dominate the total. Get a 2026 estimate before you commit to flights, and carry cash for tips and small purchases.
