How to get to Gabon: airports, flights and border crossings

Fly into Libreville (LBV) — it is the only airport most travellers use, with the country's main international connections. Almost everyone arrives by air; land and sea entry exist but are slow and rarely worth it. Book the e-visa before the flight, and check your passport's eligibility first.

Quick answer

Fly into Libreville (LBV). It is the airport with the widest choice of international flights and the one that connects to the rest of the country, including the Transgabonais train and domestic flights to the parks' access towns.

If you are already in the region, Port-Gentil or Franceville can work as a second entry point, but connections are thinner and schedules change. Land borders with Cameroon, Equatorial Guinea and the Republic of the Congo are open in principle but involve long, slow road days and paperwork; treat them as an option for overlanders, not for a first trip. There are no scheduled passenger ferries into Gabon.

By air

Libreville is the hub. Long-haul travellers usually connect through a European or African hub — Paris, Addis Ababa, Casablanca or Istanbul are the common ones — then take a regional flight into LBV. Direct flights from the US, UK, Canada, Australia or New Zealand do not exist; every route involves at least one connection.

From the US, expect roughly 18–24 hours of total travel with one or two stops. From the UK, about 10–14 hours via a European or North African hub. From Canada, add a transatlantic leg first. From Australia and New Zealand, it is a long two- to three-day journey via the Middle East, Europe or Africa. Treat all of these as planning bands, not schedules — routings and frequencies change.

Book the international leg and the e-visa together, because the visa is applied for online before departure and you will be asked for proof of onward or return travel and accommodation. Domestic flights inside Gabon are limited and fill up in the dry season, so if your trip includes a park, book the internal connection at the same time as the international one.

By land

Gabon shares borders with Cameroon to the north, Equatorial Guinea to the north-west and the Republic of the Congo to the east and south. Crossing by road is possible, but the roads on the Gabonese side are often unpaved and slow, and there are checkpoints. Budget a full day for a crossing that looks short on the map.

You will need the same e-visa in advance, plus your yellow fever vaccination certificate, which is checked at entry. If you are driving your own vehicle, carry the registration, insurance and a letter of authorisation if it is not yours. Cross-border buses and shared taxis run on some routes but schedules are unreliable; ask locally before committing.

By sea

There are no scheduled passenger ferries carrying travellers into Gabon. Port-Gentil and Libreville are working ports, and the people who arrive by sea are usually on cargo ships, expedition vessels or private boats. If you are arriving on a yacht or a cargo ship, expect port formalities and have your visa and vaccination certificate ready.

For everyone else, the sea is not a route. Fly.

Before you book

Check the visa first, not last. Gabon uses an online e-visa applied for before travel, and eligibility is not the same for every passport — US passport holders in particular should confirm the current position before paying for flights. Then check your passport validity (six months beyond arrival is the safe rule) and your yellow fever certificate.

Book the international flight, the internal connection and the first two nights in Libreville as one block. Arrival is usually late, and the city's hotels and airport transfers are easier to arrange in advance. If your trip continues to a park, the lodge package normally includes the transfer from Libreville, so confirm what is covered before you add separate transport.

  • E-visa approved before departure
  • Passport valid six months beyond arrival
  • Yellow fever certificate
  • Proof of accommodation and onward travel
  • Some CFA francs in cash for the first day

Arriving in Libreville

Léon-Mba International Airport sits north of the city centre, a drive of roughly 20–30 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are the usual way in; agree the fare before you get in, or arrange a hotel transfer. There is no rail link from the airport.

Change a small amount of money at the airport for immediate needs and get the rest in town, where rates are usually better. A local SIM or eSIM set up on arrival makes the transfer and any onward booking much easier. If you are heading straight to a park, you will usually fly or take the train the next morning, so one night near the airport or in the centre is enough.
