Step 1: fix your month. The dry, cooler window from June to September suits Loango, Lopé, Lambaréné and Ivindo. Pongara's turtle season runs November to February. You rarely get both in one trip, so pick the coast-and-whales version or the turtles version, not both.
Step 2: choose one park, not three. Loango is the strongest first park: elephants and hippos on the beach, whales offshore in season, and a boat or charter link from Libreville via Port-Gentil or Omboué. Lopé is the alternative if you want the train: the Transgabonais runs from Libreville into the interior, and the park sits near the line. Pongara is the short option, a boat ride across the estuary from Libreville, good for one or two nights.
Step 3: book the park as a package. Lodges typically bundle accommodation, meals, guided activities, the park fee and transfers. Ask for the inclusions in writing before you pay, and confirm what happens if a flight or train is delayed.
Step 4: keep Libreville nights on both sides. Two nights at the start covers arrival, the national museum, Mont-Bouët market and the seafront; one night at the end protects you from a late train or flight before your international departure.
Step 5: add a city or river stop only if you have spare days. Lambaréné, on the Ogooué, has the Albert Schweitzer hospital museum and lake trips. Franceville, at the end of the railway in the south-east, is the base for the Batéké Plateau. Port-Gentil is mainly a transport hinge for Loango, not a sight in itself.
Step 6: sort paperwork before booking anything non-refundable. Get the e-visa for Libreville airport first, and if you hold a US passport, check whether Gabon is issuing visas to you at all.

Distances look short on the map and take far longer on the ground. Internal flights and charters do much of the work; road transfers to park gates can be several hours on unpaved surfaces. Build in a buffer day before any international flight.
The Transgabonais train is the practical way to reach the Lopé area, but it can run late. Do not plan a same-day connection to an international departure.
Park lodges are few and fill in the June–September high season. Book months ahead for Loango and Ivindo. Outside the main season, some camps close or run reduced activities; confirm dates directly.
