Where to stay in Gabon: best areas and types of hotel

Use this table to pick a base and a budget band before you look at specific properties. Passport matters less for hotels than for the visa: if you hold a US passport, confirm whether Gabon is issuing you a visa before paying any deposit.

Almost every trip starts here, because the international airport is here and the e-visa is tied to arrival at Libreville airport. Two nights covers the practical jobs: cash, a SIM, a pharmacy run and a first look at the city. The seafront, the museum and the markets are all within a short drive of the centre.

Pick a hotel in the centre or along the coast road if you want restaurants within walking distance. Airport-side hotels suit a late arrival or an early domestic flight to Port-Gentil or Franceville. Both are in the same price band, so choose on your next morning's plan rather than on price.

Book the first night before you fly. Arriving without a reservation means negotiating in French after a long flight, often at inflated walk-in rates.

Gabon's parks are not places where you turn up and choose a guesthouse. Most accommodation inside or beside Loango, Lopé, Ivindo and Pongara is a small lodge sold as a package: room, meals, transfers and guided activities in one price. Some lodges have only a handful of rooms, so availability, not price, is the binding constraint.

That changes how you book. You usually contact the lodge or a specialist operator, agree dates, pay a deposit by bank transfer, and receive a transfer plan from Libreville or from the nearest airstrip or station. Lopé is the exception worth knowing: it sits on the Transgabonais line, so you can arrive by train rather than by charter flight.

One park per week is the realistic pace. Two parks in a week means most of your time goes into transfers on unpaved roads.

Lambaréné, on the Ogooué, is a natural stop between Libreville and the interior: one or two nights, the Schweitzer hospital and the lakes. Franceville in the south-east is a transport hub for the Batéké Plateau and has simple business hotels rather than lodges. Tchibanga, in the far south, is a staging point rather than a destination; expect basic rooms and confirm availability before you commit to the drive.

Outside Libreville, Port-Gentil and Franceville, hotel standards drop quickly. A room described as comfortable may mean cold water and a generator. Ask specifically about hot water, air conditioning, mosquito nets and whether power runs at night.

June to September is the dry season and the busiest window for parks, so lodges fill three to six months out. Christmas and New Year in Libreville also tighten. If your dates are fixed, book the lodge first and build flights around it, not the other way round.

Payments split by type. Libreville hotels take cards and often quote in CFA francs; lodges frequently ask for a bank transfer deposit and settle the balance on site, sometimes in cash. Carry more cash than you think you need for tips, drinks and road stops, and read the money page before you go.

Travel insurance matters here more than in most destinations: light aircraft, boat transfers and remote lodges are exactly the situations where a standard policy excludes you. Check that your policy covers the activities you have booked.

Power is 220 V, types C and E, the same as much of Europe; US travellers need a plug adapter and should not rely on voltage converters for high-draw devices. Outages are common inland, so a power bank and a torch are worth packing.

Mobile data in Libreville is workable and patchy in the parks. Sort a SIM or eSIM on arrival rather than assuming lodge Wi-Fi. Health preparation belongs before departure, not after arrival: check the vaccines and malaria advice for the regions you are visiting.
