The East Kootenays is one long valley between the Rockies and the Purcells, from Golden down to the US border. It is drier and hotter in summer and colder in winter than the West Kootenays, and it runs on Mountain time — one hour ahead of most of BC. Almost everyone arrives by car from Calgary, about 3 hours to Fernie. Pick one base and drive out from it: Cranbrook for the airport and Kimberley, Fernie for skiing and the Crowsnest Pass, the Columbia Valley (Invermere, Radium, Fairmont) for lakes and hot springs.

Bags between cities

No rail here; luggage travels with you in the car. Mountain Man Mike's bus runs one trip a week (Tuesday) from Calgary to Sparwood, Fernie and Cranbrook.
