Golden sits where the Trans-Canada Highway (1) meets Highway 95, between Banff and Revelstoke, so most travellers see it from a car window. Stay and it turns into a base for Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, class-four whitewater on the Kicking Horse River, and hikes that stay under snow until mid-June. The town itself is small: two supermarkets, one main street, and a covered timber pedestrian bridge over the river.

Getting around

The centre is walkable: IGA on the north side of the river, SavOn on the south. A car is the easiest way to reach the resort, trailheads and the Skybridge. In winter the resort runs a Snow Shuttle around town and up the mountain (fare applies, check current price). Mount 7 Taxi runs 24 h; a cross-town trip is about C$10–15 and up to Kicking Horse about C$30–40. No passenger trains stop in Golden.

Safety

Golden is a small, low-crime mountain town; the real risks are wildlife on trails, fast-changing weather and winter driving on Highway 1. Carry bear spray where posted and check road conditions before crossing mountain passes.
  • Mountain weather changes fast: carry a shell even on a clear morning.
  • Most high hikes hold snow until mid-June, sometimes late July.
  • Fill up before long drives: services are sparse between Golden and Revelstoke or Lake Louise.
  • Cell coverage drops on Highway 95 and side valleys.
