Field

Stay 1 night in Field as a Yoho base, or skip it and sleep in Lake Louise or Golden: it has 2 cafés, a few lodges and no fuel.

Field is a village of about 170 people inside Yoho National Park, on the Trans-Canada Highway between Lake Louise and Golden. It is a bed-and-breakfast base for Yoho Valley Road, Takakkaw Falls and the Spiral Tunnels, not a sightseeing town. One night covers it; two if you hike.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are driving the Trans-Canada in snow, wildlife on the road and no fuel or phone signal in the Yoho Valley. Tell someone your route before a hike.
  • No fuel station in Field: fill up in Lake Louise or Golden before you arrive.
  • Yoho Valley Road to Takakkaw Falls is seasonal and closed in winter; check the Parks Canada road report before driving it.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the Yoho Valley; download maps and bookings before you leave Highway 1.
  • Wildlife on and beside the highway: elk and bears. Stay in your car for wildlife, keep 100 m from bears.
  • Village services are limited and some close in winter; check opening dates before a cold-season stay.
