Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No fuel station in Field: fill up in Lake Louise or Golden before you arrive.
- Yoho Valley Road to Takakkaw Falls is seasonal and closed in winter; check the Parks Canada road report before driving it.
- Cell coverage is patchy in the Yoho Valley; download maps and bookings before you leave Highway 1.
- Wildlife on and beside the highway: elk and bears. Stay in your car for wildlife, keep 100 m from bears.
- Village services are limited and some close in winter; check opening dates before a cold-season stay.
Very safe for a village of its size; the real risks are driving the Trans-Canada in snow, wildlife on the road and no fuel or phone signal in the Yoho Valley. Tell someone your route before a hike.
