The West Kootenays is the mountain-and-lake corner of southeast British Columbia: Nelson, Castlegar, Trail, Rossland, Kaslo, Creston and the Arrow Lakes valleys, all south of the Trans-Canada Highway and west of the East Kootenays. Towns sit 30–90 minutes apart on winding roads, so one base plus day drives beats changing hotels. Public transit exists but is thin and partly reservation-only; a car is the practical answer. Come for lake beaches and hot springs in July–August, for larch and quiet trails in September, and for skiing at Rossland and Nelson in January–March.
