The California desert is the southeast quarter of the state: Joshua Tree, the Mojave, Death Valley's edges, the Salton Sea and the Colorado River towns. It is a driving region — sights sit 30–120 minutes apart on empty roads, and summer heat (40 °C+) rules out daytime hiking. Come November to March for full days outdoors, or April and October for shorter ones. Two nights minimum, three to five if you add Death Valley or the Mojave Preserve.
