Southern California is a 400 km coastal strip of cities that run into each other, plus desert and mountains behind them. It is car country: outside a few walkable pockets, transit is slow and the freeways are the default. Pick one base (Los Angeles for film, museums and beaches; San Diego for a smaller, calmer coast), add a second only if you have 7+ nights, and treat the desert and mountains as their own trip.
