  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

San Diego is a coastal city of 1.4 million on the Mexican border, 160 km south of Los Angeles. Its sights are spread across separate neighbourhoods, so the trip is a set of half-days by the water, in Balboa Park and around the bay rather than one walkable centre. Weather is mild all year, with a cool cloudy spell in late spring.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

The MTS Trolley (Blue, Green, Orange lines) and buses cover Downtown, Old Town, Mission Valley and the border at San Ysidro; a day pass is the easy buy. The Coaster commuter train runs up the coast to Carlsbad and Oceanside. Many beach and La Jolla trips are quicker by car or rideshare, and parking near the coast is tight in summer.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

La Jolla

go

Door to door: 30–45 min

Car or rideshare up the coast, or bus 30 from Downtown

Cove, sea lions and the aquarium; go early, parking fills by mid-morning.

Coronado

go

Door to door: About 30 min

Ferry from Downtown to Coronado Landing, then walk or bus

Beach and the Hotel del Coronado; the ferry is the pleasant way over.

Tijuana, Mexico

caution

Door to door: 1–1.5 h plus the border wait

Blue Line Trolley to San Ysidro, then cross on foot

Passport or card required both ways; the return queue can be long.

Carlsbad and Oceanside

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Coaster commuter train from Santa Fe Depot

Flower Fields (spring) and beaches; the train beats the I-5 in summer traffic.

Julian

overnight

Door to door: 1.5–2 h

Car on the I-8 and CA-79, mountain roads

Apple pie and mountain walks; a long return drive for one day.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown and the Gaslamp Quarter

Walkable to the bay, USS Midway and the ballpark; best for a first trip without a car.

Mission Beach and Pacific Beach

Beach boardwalk, casual food and nightlife; 20–30 min from Downtown by car.

La Jolla

Cove, sea lions and the aquarium; quiet evenings, higher prices.

Old Town and Mission Valley

Trolley and transit hub, chain hotels, parking often available; less to do on foot.

Coronado

Across the bay from Downtown; beach and the Hotel del Coronado, few budget beds.

Watch out

Safety

San Diego is a low-risk city for visitors. Watch the usual Downtown and beach nightlife drink and card scams, keep nothing visible in a parked car, and take the coastal fog and cold evening air seriously.
  • Late May and June are often cloudy at the coast: May Gray and June Gloom. Inland is sunnier.
  • Coastal fog is common Sep–Apr; the beach cools sharply after sunset even in summer.
  • Mid-September to October is the wildfire season: hot, dry Santa Ana winds, and power cuts are possible.
  • Do not swim or wade at the Children's Pool in La Jolla: it is a seal colony and the water is not safe.
  • Border waits at San Ysidro can run to hours on foot and by car: check live wait times before crossing.
