Del MarDel Mar, California

Give Del Mar one full day plus a beach morning: 2 nights if you want the fair or the races, otherwise sleep in Solana Beach and day-trip in.

Del Mar is a 4,000-person beach town on the San Diego County coast, 30 km north of downtown San Diego off Interstate 5. The draw is a walkable village, a cliff-top plaza, a long sandy beach below the bluffs and two big seasonal events: the San Diego County Fair in June–early July and thoroughbred racing in July–August. There is no train station in town; the nearest is Solana Beach, 3 km north. Two nights covers it; one day is enough if you are already based in North County.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

The village, plaza and beach are walkable in 10–20 minutes. For anything else you need a car, a rideshare or the NCTD bus along the coast; the Coaster and Amtrak stop at Solana Beach, not in Del Mar. Parking near the beach and the plaza is metered and fills early on summer weekends.

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Camino Del Mar village

Walk to the plaza, restaurants and the beach stairs; the most expensive and the most convenient.

Jimmy Durante Blvd by the fairgrounds

Chain hotels across from the race track and fairgrounds; best for event weekends, a 25–35 min walk from the beach.

Solana Beach

3 km (1.9 mi) north, has the Amtrak/Coaster station and usually cheaper rooms; walk or rideshare into Del Mar.

East along El Camino Real

Business hotels with parking, 5–10 min drive from the sand; pick this if you have a car.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime, well-off beach town; the real risks are rip currents and cold water at the beach, cliff-edge paths, and summer traffic and parking on I-5 and Camino Del Mar.
  • There is no train station in Del Mar: trains call at Solana Beach, about 3 km (1.9 mi) north.
  • Beach access is by stairs and ramps down the bluffs; the sand narrows at high tide and winter storms move it around.
  • Race season and the county fair push room rates up and fill lots: book weeks ahead.
  • Coastal fog can sit over the beach until midday in late spring and early summer.
  • Prices are shown before sales tax; tipping is expected at sit-down restaurants.
