Zhuanghe, Dalian: neighborhood guide

Zhuanghe sits on the Yellow Sea coast in the southeast of Dalian's administrative area, but it is not a district of the city you walk around after dinner. It is a county-level city with its own bus station and high-speed rail stop, surrounded by farmland, low hills and river valleys. The urban centre is small and functional; the reason travellers come is the countryside around it.

Almost all of the sights are outside town. Bingyu National Geopark, in Xianrendong Town, is a twisting river valley between steep cliffs with hiking, boat rides and small Buddhist and Taoist temples along the water. Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park, in the same township, is a forest and ridge park with a marked trail network. Buyun Mountain Hot Spring, in Buyun Mountain Township, is a separate stop on the same rural bus routes.

That geography decides the trip. You do not base yourself in Zhuanghe town to see Dalian; you base yourself near the valley, or you come out from Dalian for one long day and go back.

Stay in Zhuanghe if the valley is the point of your trip. The practical version is one night in or near Xianrendong Town so you can walk Bingyu Valley in the morning and reach Tianmen Mountain or the hot springs without a 5-hour round trip from Dalian. Hotels near Bingyu start from roughly ¥300 for a double room (2026 estimate, check), and simple farm stays are far cheaper — but expect no English and bring cash or a working payment app.

Zhuanghe is a coastal county, so the local table leans on seafood from the Yellow Sea: clams, oysters, crab, prawns and flatfish, usually steamed or boiled and served with vinegar and ginger (check). Around the bus station and the main streets of Zhuanghe town there are noodle shops, dumpling houses and barbecue stalls that stay open late (check); near the parks the choice narrows to guesthouse kitchens and farm restaurants, where you eat what the family is cooking that day (check).

Northeast Chinese staples fill the gaps: dumplings, stewed pork with pickled cabbage, corn porridge and cold dishes. Vegetarian food is not a concept most kitchens work with — ask for dishes without meat and expect some fish sauce or stock in the vegetables (check). If you have allergies, carry a written Chinese note naming the ingredient, because rural kitchens share woks and boards (check).

Bring cash as a backup: small farm stays and roadside stalls may not take foreign cards, and your Alipay or WeChat Pay setup should be tested before you leave Dalian (check).

From Dalian, buses to Zhuanghe leave mainly from Jianshe Street Bus Station, opposite Dalian Railway Station, and take about 2 h 30 min (check). Buses also run from Jinzhou Bus Station and Lüshun Bus Station (check). Zhuanghe Bus Station is at 28 Yingbin Boulevard and is the hub for rural routes to Bingyu Valley, Tianmen Mountain and Buyun Mountain (check).

By rail, there are about 9 trains a day from Dalian North Station to Zhuanghe North, taking 60–90 minutes, plus 2 a day from Dalian Central Station at 90–110 minutes; most also stop at Jinzhou (check). Bus 103 connects Zhuanghe North Station with Zhuanghe Bus Station, which is the link you need if you arrive by train and continue by rural bus (check).

For Bingyu Valley, buses leave from Zhuanghe Bus Station, and there is one direct bus a day from Dalian Central Bus Station at about 07:25 taking roughly 2 h 30 min (check). Tianmen Mountain has no bus station at the park; you are dropped on the road and walk about 20 minutes to the entrance (check). Buyun Mountain hot springs are reached by bus from Zhuanghe Bus Station (check). A car or a hired driver makes all three much easier, especially with luggage.
