Jinzhou, Dalian: neighborhood guide

Jinzhou is a district of Dalian in northeast China, wrapping the old town, the Dalian Development Area and the coast at Golden Pebble Beach (Jinshitan). The name on maps is now Jinzhou-Pulandian New District, but locals still say Jinzhou.

The old town is a commuter place: a railway station, a grid of ordinary streets, a museum and a restored Qing-era yamen. The Development Area is newer and more spread out, built around offices, campuses and wide roads. Golden Pebble Beach is the tourist end, with imported sand, rock formations and a cluster of paid attractions around the sand.

Distances are large. The old town, the Development Area and the beach sit kilometres apart, so pick one and stay near it rather than treating Jinzhou as one walkable neighbourhood.

Stay if your trip is about the beach or the Development Area, or if you want cheaper rooms and do not mind a long metro ride into central Dalian. A night or two near Golden Pebble Beach works well in summer.

Do not stay if this is your first visit and you want the classic Dalian experience. Zhongshan and Xigang put you near the harbour, the old streets and the food, and you can still reach the beach on Line 3 in about an hour.

The old town of Jinzhou suits travellers who want a plain, working Chinese district and a base for the railway, not a holiday strip.

Food in Jinzhou is everyday northeastern Chinese cooking: dumplings, noodles, grilled skewers and seafood, with Dalian's coastal specialities showing up near the beach. The old town and the Development Area have plenty of small restaurants and street stalls, mostly without English menus.

Around Golden Pebble Beach, expect seafood restaurants and snack stalls that cater to day trippers. Many of the beach-side shops and stalls close in bad weather and outside summer, so check before you travel out and carry a backup plan for dinner.

For a wider choice, central Dalian is the better bet; treat Jinzhou meals as convenient rather than a reason to come.

By rail, Jinzhou Railway Station sits in the south of the old town and most trains between Dalian and points north call there; fares from Dalian Railway Station are around ¥10 (2026 estimate).

By metro, Line 3 runs from Dalian Railway Station through the Development Area towards Jinshitan, with stops serving the beach and the new district. A single journey to Jinshitan takes about an hour and costs ¥8 (2026 estimate); a tourist shuttle or taxi covers the last stretch from the station to the sand.

By bus, Dalian Jiaoyun Group runs frequent commuter services from central Dalian to the old town, and coaches to Jinzhou Central Bus Station are usually faster. Local bus routes and the Development Area's own DDA routes fill in the gaps; taxis and ride-hailing are cheap for short hops.
