Ganjingzi, Dalian: neighborhood guide

Ganjingzi (甘井子区) is the biggest of Dalian's districts by area, running from the Heishijiao university and tech zone in the south up to the edge of the Dalian development zone in the north and west to Yingchengzi. That size is the point and the problem: it is a patchwork of campuses, industrial land, new apartment blocks, villages and hills, not a walkable old town.

For most visitors the district means one thing — Dalian Zhoushuizi International Airport (DLC) is here. Beyond the airport, the draws are green and western: the Dalian Western Suburbs National Forest Park and Jinlong Temple National Forest Park, the Chengyuan hot-spring resort, and the Dalian Han Tombs Museum out at Yingchengzi. None of these sit next to each other, so plan transport rather than a walking route.

Stay if you have an early flight, a long layover, or a late arrival and want to collapse near the terminal. It also works for a quiet, green stop with a car or a driver, or for a hot-spring night at Chengyuan.

Do not stay if this is your first Dalian trip and you want the waterfront, the old streets and the seafood restaurants on foot. Base in Zhongshan for the harbour and downtown, or Shahekou for Xinghai Square and museums, and use Ganjingzi as a transfer. Jinzhou and Lüshunkou are separate day-trip directions, not substitutes for a downtown base.

If you split the trip, keep the airport night last: one night in Ganjingzi before departure, the rest downtown.

Ganjingzi is a residential and campus district, so food is everyday rather than destination: noodle and dumpling shops, barbecue skewers, hotpot, and mall restaurants around the bigger intersections and near the airport. Dalian cooking leans on seafood — grilled scallops, clams, sea cucumber and fish dumplings — and that is what to order when you find a busy place.

Near the airport, hotel restaurants and the terminal food court are the reliable options for a late arrival. Around Heishijiao and the university area, cheap student canteens and small kitchens keep long hours. Prices are lower than downtown: a bowl of noodles or a plate of dumplings is commonly ¥15–35, a seafood meal ¥80–150 per person (2026 estimate).

If food is the reason for your trip, eat downtown: Zhongshan and Shahekou have the concentration of seafood restaurants and markets.

By air: DLC is in the district, so a taxi from the terminal to a nearby hotel is short; confirm the fare with the driver or use a metered cab (check). By light rail, the district has four stops — Jinjia Jie, Quanshui, Houyuan and Dalian Wan — useful for the southern and eastern edges. Metro Line 2 serves parts of the district, including the Hongjin Road area, and connects toward the city centre.

Inside the district, buses do the heavy lifting: routes 507, 535, 705, 709 and 716 stop near Zhangxin Road for the Western Suburbs National Forest Park, while routes 3, 32, 36 and 48 stop at Jinliu Road East; bus 511 loops inside the park. For Jinlong Temple National Forest Park, take bus 906 from Hongjin Road station on Line 2 to the last stop, then walk about 20 minutes to the entrance. For the Han Tombs Museum, bus 1101 stops at Heshun Garden Villas, roughly 300 m away.

Taxis and ride-hailing are the practical way to link scattered sights; agree the destination in Chinese characters. Allow 20–40 minutes to the downtown districts depending on traffic (check).
