The Central Belt is Scotland's lowland corridor between the Firth of Forth and the Firth of Clyde: Edinburgh, Glasgow and the towns strung between them, all within about an hour by train. Edinburgh suits first-timers, castle-and-Royal-Mile days and August festivals; Glasgow is cheaper, bigger for food, music and museums, and the gateway to the Highlands and the west coast ferries. Changing hotels every night buys you nothing here.
