The Scottish Borders is a lowland region of ruined abbeys, peel towers and river valleys between Edinburgh and the English border. There is no single big town: Jedburgh, Melrose, Kelso and Peebles are 20–50 minutes apart by road. Sleep in Melrose or Galashiels for the abbey cluster and the Borders Railway, or in Peebles for the Tweed valley. A car turns four towns into one day; without one you ride radial buses from Edinburgh, Galashiels or Berwick-upon-Tweed and lose hours.

Jedburgh, Kelso and Hawick have no railway station; the nearest railheads are Tweedbank, Berwick-upon-Tweed and Carlisle.
Sunday buses are sparse — two on the 253 to Berwick, and some routes do not run at all.
Many border roads are single carriageway and twisty; add time for A68 and A708 drives.
Abbey sites and stately homes keep seasonal hours; check before you travel.
