Caithness and Sutherland is the far north of the Scottish Highlands: two old counties, thinly populated, joined for travel purposes. The east coast (Helmsdale, Wick, Thurso, John o'Groats) has trains and buses; the north and west coasts (Durness, Kinlochbervie, Lochinver) are slow by public transport and need a vehicle. Most visitors come for the North Coast 500 driving circuit, the cliffs at Dunnet Head and Duncansby Head, Iron Age brochs, and the emptiness left by the Clearances. Two to four nights is enough for the east; add two more for the west.
