How much does a trip to Belize cost? Daily budget and prices

Belize is the priciest country on the Central American mainland, and the reason is tours, not beds. A dorm or simple guesthouse is cheap by regional standards; a reef day, a cave day and a Maya-site day are not. Decide how many guided days you want before you book anything else.

Season moves the accommodation line more than the food line. High season runs roughly December to April, when dry weather and North American holidays push room rates up and the cayes fill; the wet months from June to November are cheaper and quieter, with a short spike around Easter and Belize's September celebrations. Rates below are per person per day, sharing a room at mid-range and comfort, international flights excluded.

Food is the easiest place to save. Rice and beans with stewed chicken, the everyday plate, runs BZ$10–18 at a local eatery; a Belikin beer is BZ$5–10. Restaurant meals on the cayes and in resort areas cost noticeably more than the same dish inland.

Transport splits into two systems. Buses are cheap and slow; water taxis and domestic flights are fast and priced accordingly. The water taxi from Belize City to Caye Caulker is BZ$40–60 one way, and a domestic flight to the cayes is around BZ$250 one way (2026 estimate).

Guided tours are the single line that decides your budget. The ATM cave, a reef day out of Caye Caulker or San Pedro, and a Caracol or Tikal run each cost roughly BZ$150–300, and a Blue Hole dive day costs far more. Two or three tours across a week is a normal, satisfying pace; one a day is what pushes a mid-range trip toward the top of its band.

The second variable is how you move. Buses and the ferry keep transport near BZ$40–100 a day. Adding domestic flights between Belize City, the cayes and the south can add BZ$250 or more per hop, which is why comfort-tier transport bands are wide.

Accommodation is the third. A dorm bed is BZ$40–70; a mid-range guesthouse room is BZ$120–250; a beach resort or jungle lodge starts around BZ$500 and climbs quickly in high season. Staying inland in the Cayo District is usually cheaper than staying on Ambergris Caye for the same standard.

The Belize dollar is fixed at 2 to 1 US dollar, and US dollars are accepted almost everywhere. The trap is that prices are often quoted as bare numbers — "$50" — and you have to know which dollar is meant. Ask, or watch whether the change comes back in Belize dollars.

Cards work at hotels and many tour companies, sometimes with a surcharge, but small eateries, buses, market stalls and village shops are cash. Carry a mix, and keep small notes for buses and street food.

Change from a US-dollar note usually comes in Belize dollars. Spend those before you leave: Belize dollars are hard to exchange outside the country.

Base inland for part of the trip. San Ignacio and the Cayo District give you Maya sites, caves and jungle at lower room rates than the cayes, and buses connect the two halves cheaply.

Book tours locally rather than as a package. Operators in San Ignacio and on Caye Caulker compete on price for the same reef and cave days, and a group size of six to ten usually costs less per person than a private guide.

Eat where locals eat, take the bus or ferry instead of flying, and travel in the wet months if you can handle afternoon rain. None of that reduces the quality of the reef or the ruins — it just moves money from transport and beds into the tours that are actually worth paying for.
