Step by step: choosing your transport
Start with your first night. If it is on Ambergris Caye or Caye Caulker, book a water taxi or a domestic flight from Philip S. W. Goldson International (BZE) rather than going into Belize City. Water taxis run from about 07:00 to 17:30, and the last boats leave mid-afternoon, so a late arrival means a flight or a night in the city.
If your first stop is San Ignacio or the Cayo District, take a shuttle from the airport (about 2 h, book a day ahead) or a bus from Belize City (2–3 h, BZ$10–15). Buses are former US school buses on the main highways: cheap and frequent enough on the Western Highway, but they do not reach the lodges, and timetables are loose.
For the south — Placencia, Hopkins, Punta Gorda — a domestic flight saves most of a day; driving takes 3–5 h from Belize City. Rental cars make sense for Mountain Pine Ridge, Caracol and village-hopping, but the dirt roads to Caracol need a 4x4, and taking a rental into Guatemala needs written permission from the company.
On the cayes, everything is walkable or a short bike ride. Golf carts are the local taxi: US$50–80 a day, driven on public roads, so no drinking and driving.

Notes and traps
Northers between November and February can make the crossing to the cayes rough; if you get seasick, take the flight. Domestic planes are small with a baggage limit of about 50 lb (23 kg), so pack light or pay for extra.
Many small-town businesses close on Sundays and on Good Friday, which affects buses, shuttles and rental desks. Confirm your onward transport the day before. Tap water is treated in Belize City and San Pedro, but most visitors drink bottled or filtered water; bring paper for bus stops.
