Belize itineraries: 1 week, 2 weeks and 3 weeks

Pick by nights, not by days: every transfer in Belize costs you half a day. The table below is the shortest version of each route that still works.

Fly or bus to Belize City, then take a water taxi to Caye Caulker (about 45–60 minutes). Four nights gives you one full reef day (Hol Chan Marine Reserve, shark-ray alley), one slow day on the island, and slack for a cancelled boat. Caye Caulker is car-free and small, so you lose no time moving around.

Then water taxi back to Belize City and a shuttle to San Ignacio, roughly 2 hours. Three nights covers the ATM cave (a full day, book ahead), Xunantunich and Cahal Pech, and one evening in town. Exit by shuttle to the airport, or overland to Guatemala at Benque Viejo.

If you have only 5 days, cut one caye night and one San Ignacio night, or drop the inland leg entirely and stay on the reef.

Same start: Caye Caulker 4 nights, San Ignacio 3 nights. From San Ignacio, a shuttle to Flores in Guatemala takes about 3–4 hours including the border. Two or three nights in Flores gives you one full day at Tikal and one day on Lake Petén Itzá.

You can return to Belize or fly out of Guatemala. Flying Flores – Guatemala City is the usual way to connect to an international flight. If you cross back overland, budget the BZ$40 exit fee at Benque Viejo (check).

This route runs north to south: Ambergris Caye 4 nights, San Ignacio 4, Hopkins 2, Placencia 4. Ambergris (San Pedro) has the bigger dive scene and more restaurants; Caye Caulker is cheaper and quieter. Choose one, not both, unless you have three weeks.

From San Ignacio, a shuttle to Hopkins takes about 2–3 hours. Hopkins is a Garífuna village and the base for Cockscomb Basin, where jaguar tracks are the draw. Then continue south to Placencia, about 1.5–2 hours, for beaches and, in season, whale sharks.

Finish by flying Placencia – Belize City to connect to your international flight; the road back is long and the small planes save a day.

Take the 14-day route and add Lamanai (1 night, reached by river from Orange Walk) and Punta Gorda in Toledo (3 nights) for Maya villages, cacao farms and the road less travelled. Lamanai fits best at the start, between the cayes and San Ignacio; Punta Gorda fits at the end, after Placencia.

Three weeks also lets you slow down: two reef days instead of one, a rest day between transfers, and a spare day for weather. In Belize the weather, not the distance, is what breaks plans.

Distances look short on the map but roads and boats set the real pace. Water taxis and small planes serve the coast; shuttles and buses serve the inland. Belize City is a transport hub, not a base — pass through it.

Book reef trips and the ATM cave early in your stay so a cancellation can be moved. Carry cash for water taxis, park fees and small operators. Check entry rules, exit fees and current schedules before you travel.
