If you land on Friday evening, keep Friday night light — a hutong walk and dinner — and treat Saturday and Sunday as the two full days.

Prices and hours
Most sights open around 08:00–08:30 and close between 17:00 and 18:00; the Forbidden City closes on Mondays in most seasons, so a Monday weekend needs a different plan. Last entry is usually 60–90 minutes before closing. Confirm the exact hours on the official site the week you travel.
Tickets are cheap by Western standards but the booking system is the real gate. The Forbidden City and Mutianyu both cap daily numbers and release slots in advance; bring your passport, since it is the ID tied to the booking. Cash is accepted at ticket windows in theory, but in practice almost everyone pays by phone.

Getting there
Beijing Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) both connect to the metro. From Capital, the Airport Express runs to Dongzhimen in about 25–30 minutes for CNY 25, 2026 estimate; a taxi to Dongcheng is 40–60 minutes and CNY 100–130 depending on traffic. From Daxing, the Daxing Airport Express reaches Caoqiao in roughly 20 minutes, then transfer to Line 10.
Inside the city, the metro is the fastest way to move and costs CNY 3–10 per ride. Lines 1 and 2 cover Tian'anmen, Qianmen and the old centre; Line 5 reaches the Temple of Heaven. Buy a Yikatong card or scan an Alipay or WeChat Pay transport QR — set this up before you fly, because it is hard to fix at the airport.
For Mutianyu, options are a pre-booked car (roughly CNY 500–700 return, 2026 estimate), a tour with hotel pickup, or a shuttle bus from a central pickup point. Leave by 07:00 to be on the wall before the tour groups.
