Where to stay in Beijing: best neighborhoods and hotels

Stay in Dongcheng, the district that holds the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square, Wangfujing and the hutongs around Nanluoguxiang. It puts the main sights within walking or short metro distance and keeps taxi rides cheap. If you care more about restaurants and bars than monuments, Sanlitun in Chaoyang is the alternative. Both sit inside the Second Ring Road, so you are never far from a Line 1, 2, 5 or 10 train.

Book 4–5 nights in one place. Beijing is large — a cross-city move costs an hour and a taxi fare — and the sights are spread across the centre rather than clustered in one district.

Prices are 2026 estimates for a mid-range double room in high season. Metro lines are the ones that matter for sightseeing.

Dongcheng and Wangfujing suit most first trips. You can walk to the Forbidden City in the morning, eat on Wangfujing or in the side streets, and reach the Temple of Heaven or the Summer Palace by metro without changing more than once. Hotel stock is large, from international chains to small courtyard guesthouses, and English is more common at front desks here than elsewhere.

Qianmen and Dashilan, just south of Tiananmen, put you in restored low-rise lanes with the Forbidden City a short walk north. It is quieter at night than Wangfujing and slightly cheaper, but the metro station is Line 2 and 8 only, so some trips need a change.

The hutong areas — Nanluoguxiang, Houhai, Yonghegong — are the most atmospheric choice: courtyard hotels, small bars, and the Bell and Drum Towers nearby. Rooms are often small, some courtyards share bathrooms, and cars cannot always reach the door, so you may walk the last few minutes with luggage. Confirm the address and access before booking.

Sanlitun in Chaoyang is where you stay if evenings matter more than mornings: bars, restaurants, malls and a younger crowd, on Line 10 with Line 6 nearby. It is a 20–35 minute metro ride to the central sights, which is fine if you plan one big sight a day.

If you arrive or leave by high-speed rail, Beijing South and the Xuanwu area are practical for one night, with the Temple of Heaven close. For the Great Wall, a night in Huairou or Miyun near Mutianyu or Simatai buys you an early start before the coaches arrive; otherwise do it as a day trip from the centre.

Beijing hotel prices are moderate by big-city standards outside holiday weeks. The bands below are 2026 estimates for a double room per night, before any booking-site discount.

Book 4–6 weeks ahead for April–May and September–October, and earlier for the first week of October and Chinese New Year. Confirm in writing that the hotel accepts foreign passports; a few budget properties still do not, and you will be turned away at check-in (check).

Choose a hotel within about 10 minutes' walk of a metro station on Line 1, 2, 5 or 10. Beijing traffic is heavy, so the metro is usually faster than a taxi for anything over 3 km, and stations have English signage.

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay and an eSIM or VPN before departure — payment and some apps are hard to fix once you land. Keep your passport with you; it is needed for hotel registration and some ticket bookings.

If you are moving on, Beijing South and Beijing West are the main high-speed rail stations, and both are on the metro. Allow 45–60 minutes from a central hotel to the station plus check-in time.
