San Diego is a coastal city of 1.4 million on the Mexican border, 160 km south of Los Angeles. Its sights are spread across separate neighbourhoods, so the trip is a set of half-days by the water, in Balboa Park and around the bay rather than one walkable centre. Weather is mild all year, with a cool cloudy spell in late spring.

Getting around
The MTS Trolley (Blue, Green, Orange lines) and buses cover Downtown, Old Town, Mission Valley and the border at San Ysidro; a day pass is the easy buy. The Coaster commuter train runs up the coast to Carlsbad and Oceanside. Many beach and La Jolla trips are quicker by car or rideshare, and parking near the coast is tight in summer.

Watch out
Safety
- Late May and June are often cloudy at the coast: May Gray and June Gloom. Inland is sunnier.
- Coastal fog is common Sep–Apr; the beach cools sharply after sunset even in summer.
- Mid-September to October is the wildfire season: hot, dry Santa Ana winds, and power cuts are possible.
- Do not swim or wade at the Children's Pool in La Jolla: it is a seal colony and the water is not safe.
- Border waits at San Ysidro can run to hours on foot and by car: check live wait times before crossing.
