Beijing airport to city centre: trains, buses, taxis and costs

Both airports sit outside the ring roads, so the choice is the same at each: rail if it is running and your hotel is near a station, a car if you have bags, children or a late landing. Beijing traffic is heavy from about 07:00–09:30 and 17:00–19:30, which adds 20–40 minutes to any road transfer.

The Airport Express leaves from Terminal 3 and Terminal 2 and runs to Sanyuanqiao (metro Line 10) and Dongzhimen (Lines 2 and 13). It is the cheapest reliable way in and takes about 25 minutes to Dongzhimen. From there a metro ride or a short DiDi covers most central hotels. Trains stop running in the late evening, so a landing after about 21:30 usually means a car.

A metered taxi from the official rank outside arrivals costs roughly ¥100–150 to the centre plus expressway tolls, and takes 40–70 minutes outside peak hours. Use the rank, not anyone who approaches you inside the hall. DiDi works the same way and is easier if you have no cash: set the pickup point shown in the app, usually a designated gate on the departures level or a car park.

Shuttle buses run to several hubs including Beijing Railway Station and Xidan, useful if your hotel is on a route and you land in daylight. Buy a ticket at the counter inside the terminal.

Daxing is 46 km south of the centre, so the road transfer is longer and dearer than from Capital. The Daxing Airport Express is the fast option: about 20 minutes to Caoqiao, where you change to metro Line 10 or take a DiDi onward. The station is inside the terminal complex, so the walk is short.

A taxi or DiDi to the central districts takes 60–95 minutes and costs roughly ¥200–260. If your hotel is in the south or west, Daxing can be the more convenient airport; if you are staying around Wangfujing, Sanlitun or the hutongs, budget the extra hour.

Shuttle buses also run to rail stations and city hubs, but the train is usually quicker when it is running.

Beijing transfers are cheap by US or European standards. A solo traveller on the train spends under ¥40 to reach most central areas; a couple in a taxi spends roughly ¥100–260 depending on the airport, which is often less than a single airport-train ticket in Europe. Prices below are 2026 estimates and can change.

Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly. Both link a foreign card and give you a transit QR for the metro and a DiDi button inside the same app, which removes the need for cash at the airport. A local eSIM or roaming plan also helps: you need data to call a car and to show your hotel address in Chinese.

Have your hotel name and address written in Chinese characters on your phone. Drivers rarely read English, and the app translation handles the rest. If you take a taxi from the rank, keep the printed receipt — it carries the car number if you leave something behind.

For the return leg, leave central Beijing about 3 hours before an international departure and 2 hours before a domestic one. Security at both airports is thorough and queues build quickly in the morning.
