Best tours in Beijing: walking, food and day tours

Beijing rewards a guide in exactly two places: the palace complex, where the route and the ticket rules are the hard part, and the Great Wall, where the transport is. Everything else you can do on foot with a metro card and a map.

For the Forbidden City, a licensed guide earns their fee by handling the timed entry, walking you north to south in the right order and explaining the halls you would otherwise pass in ten minutes. Half-day group tours run in the morning; private guides cost more but move at your pace.

For the Wall, the decision is which section. Badaling is the closest and the busiest; Mutianyu is a longer drive with a cable car and fewer people; Jinshanling and Simatai are for hikers who want a full day out. A day tour solves the drive, which is the real problem.

Walking and food tours work best in the hutongs north of the Forbidden City and around Houhai, Nanluoguxiang and the Qianmen lanes. Evening food tours cover roast duck, jianbing, skewers and dumplings in one loop; you could eat the same food alone for less, but you would spend the evening finding it.

Group tours in Beijing cluster in a narrow band. A half-day city walk with a licensed guide sits around CNY 200–400; add the palace ticket and it climbs. Full-day Wall tours start near CNY 300 with a shared bus and lunch, and reach CNY 700 or more for small groups with hotel pickup.

Private guiding is priced by the day, not the head, so it only makes sense for two or more people. Expect CNY 800–1,500 for eight hours, entrance fees separate. Food tours are usually evening affairs of three to four hours with tastings included; drinks beyond tea are often extra.

Most operators run daily, with morning departures for the palace and early starts (06:00–08:00) for the Wall. Book through your hotel, a licensed agency or an international booking platform; pay by Alipay or WeChat Pay where accepted, and keep some cash for small operators.

The Forbidden City sits on the north side of Tiananmen Square. Take metro Line 1 to Tian'anmen East or Tian'anmen West; the walk from the station to the Meridian Gate is 10–15 minutes. Tours usually meet at a station exit or a hotel lobby nearby.

The Wall is 60–90 km from the centre. Badaling is about 1.5 hours by road or by the suburban rail line from Beijing North; Mutianyu is roughly 1.5–2 hours by car or tour bus; Jinshanling and Simatai run 2.5–3 hours. A tour removes the transfer problem, which is why most visitors take one.

Hutong and food tours start inside the city: Nanluoguxiang and Houhai are on Line 6 and Line 8, Qianmen on Line 2 and Line 8. Arrive 10 minutes early; groups leave on time.

If you are flying in, land at Beijing Capital (PEK) or Daxing (PKX) and allow a full day before any tour. Jet-lagged arrivals do badly on an 07:00 Wall departure.

Check whether the ticket is included before you book. Palace entry is timed and passport-linked, so a tour that says "skip the line" still needs your passport number in advance (check).

Dress for walking: the palace route is 3–4 km on stone, and the Wall involves steps, some steep. Bring water, a hat in summer and a warm layer in winter.

Avoid the weeks around the Lunar New Year and the first week of October, when domestic crowds peak and prices rise. April–May and September–October are the comfortable windows.

Be sceptical of tours that bundle the palace, the Wall and a jade or silk factory in one day. They exist, they are cheap, and you spend hours in shops. Read the itinerary before paying.
