Best areas to stay in Beijing by traveller type

Beijing is a ring city. Almost everything a first-time visitor wants — the Forbidden City, Tiananmen, the Temple of Heaven, the hutongs — sits inside or just outside the Second Ring Road in Dongcheng and Xicheng. Staying there cuts your daily commute to a walk or one or two metro stops, which is worth more than a cheaper room further out.

Chaoyang, to the east, is the modern city: embassies, malls, international restaurants, Sanlitun nightlife and the 798 art district. Rooms are bigger and more hotel-like, but you will spend 20–40 minutes on the metro to reach the imperial sights.

For a short trip, pick Dongcheng. For a week or a family stay, Chaoyang's space and food options win. Budget travellers should follow the metro, not the postcode: any hostel within a few minutes of a Line 2 or Line 5 station puts the whole city within reach.

Think of Beijing as concentric rings with Tiananmen Square at the centre. The Forbidden City sits directly north of the square; the hutongs of Dongcheng wrap around its east side, and Xicheng's lakes (Houhai, Qianhai) sit to the west. Qianmen and Dashilan are just south of the square.

Chaoyang begins east of the Second Ring: Sanlitun for bars and restaurants, Guomao for the CBD and towers, 798 further northeast for galleries. Haidian is the northwest university district, closest to the Summer Palace and the Old Summer Palace.

Both airports are well outside the centre. Capital Airport (PEK) is northeast, about 25 km, reached by the Airport Express from Dongzhimen. Daxing (PKX) is far south, about 46 km, reached by the Daxing Airport Express from Caoqiao. If you land at Daxing, a hotel in the south or along Line 10 saves an hour on arrival.

Room rates swing hard with the calendar. Chinese New Year and the first week of October are the two peaks; late November to February, excluding the New Year holiday, is the cheapest stretch. Weekends are busier than weekdays for domestic travellers.

Metro service runs from roughly 05:00 to 23:00, with the last trains around 22:30–23:30 depending on the line (check). Fares are distance-based, so a short hop inside the centre costs less than a cross-city ride. Taxis and ride-hailing are cheap by Western standards but slow in rush hour.

Many museums and the Forbidden City close on Mondays and require advance booking with your passport. Build your days around that, and keep one indoor option for the smog days that still occur in winter and early spring.

From Capital Airport, the Airport Express is the fastest way in when traffic is heavy; taxis take 40–60 minutes to Dongcheng outside rush hour and much longer inside it. From Daxing, the express train to Caoqiao connects to Line 10 and Line 19.

Within the city, the metro is the default: signs are in English and Chinese, and a stored-value card or a phone QR code works on every line. Beijing South and Beijing Railway Station link to the high-speed network if you are continuing to Shanghai or Xi'an.

If you are heading to the Great Wall, most visitors join a tour with hotel pickup or take a train or bus to the Badaling or Mutianyu sections. Staying near a Line 2 station makes early departures easier.

Book the Forbidden City and major museums online in advance; tickets are released on a rolling schedule and sell out. Carry your passport, since it is your ticket at the gate.

Choose a hotel within a 5–10 minute walk of a metro station rather than one that merely looks close on a map. Beijing blocks are large and ring roads are hard to cross on foot.

For families, Chaoyang's malls, parks and international restaurants make meals and downtime easier. For solo travellers, hostel common areas in Dongcheng are the simplest way to find day-trip companions.

If you are on a budget, staying one or two stops outside the Second Ring can cut the room rate by a third without adding much travel time.
