Beijing rewards a short list. The Forbidden City is the one sight worth building the day around: 72 hectares, roughly 3 hours at a walk, and the only place where arriving at opening (08:30) genuinely changes your experience. From the north gate, Jingshan Park gives the classic view back over the roofs for a small entry fee.
Pair it with one of two things. The Temple of Heaven in the south is a park full of retired locals singing, playing cards and dancing, with the round blue-roofed hall at its centre — 2 hours, mostly outdoors. Or stay north and walk the Drum and Bell Tower hutongs, then eat in the lanes around Nanluoguxiang. Do not try to add the Summer Palace on the same day; it sits in the northwest and eats half a day on its own.
The Great Wall is the trap. Badaling and Mutianyu are 60–90 km out, and a there-and-back with traffic is 3–4 hours minimum. It works only if you have a car, a 07:00 start and no evening flight.

Most state sights run 08:30–17:00 in winter and to 17:00–18:00 in summer, with last entry about an hour before closing. The Forbidden City closes Mondays and sells a capped number of tickets per day, released online in advance; bring the passport you booked with, because it is checked at the gate. Tiananmen Square needs a separate security check and sometimes a reservation.
Budget roughly 100–150 CNY per person for entries on a one-day route, plus 30–80 CNY for subway and taxi hops, and 80–200 CNY for a sit-down dinner. Cards are rarely accepted outside hotels; set up Alipay or WeChat Pay before you fly, and keep 200–300 CNY in cash for small vendors.

Getting there
Beijing Capital (PEK) and Daxing (PKX) both connect to the subway; the Airport Express from Capital takes about 25 minutes to Dongzhimen, and Daxing has its own express line. Allow 60–90 minutes from landing to a central hotel with immigration and baggage.
Inside the city, the subway is the fastest way past traffic and every station has English signage and ticket machines that take cash or a QR code. Line 1 runs under Chang'an Avenue for Tiananmen; Line 8 serves the Forbidden City's north side and the hutongs. Taxis are metered and cheap but useless between 07:30–09:30 and 17:00–19:30. DiDi works in English inside Alipay.
If you are flying in from your home country, land the day before your sightseeing day. A same-day arrival plus the Forbidden City is how people miss their tickets.
