Agra itinerary: 1, 2 and 3 days

Agra is a small city with three big sights and one unmissable one. The table below is the decision: pick the row that matches your nights, then read the day plans underneath.

Start before dawn. The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise and the first hour has the softest light and the thinnest crowd; by 10am in high season the causeway is a queue. Buy your ticket online the day before, carry the same ID you booked with, and note that the main mausoleum platform needs a separate small ticket. Security is airport-style: no tripods, no drones, no food, and only a small bag.

From the Taj, walk or take a short auto ride to Agra Fort, the red sandstone Mughal citadel where Shah Jahan was imprisoned with a view of the tomb he built. Two to three hours covers the main courtyards. Eat lunch in the Taj Ganj area or in the newer Sadar Bazaar side, then rest through the hottest hours.

Finish at Mehtab Bagh, the garden across the Yamuna, for sunset and the classic river-front view of the Taj. If you have energy left, the Kinari Bazaar lanes near Jama Masjid are worth an hour for marble inlay, leather and sweets.

With two nights you can stop rushing. Give the Taj a second visit at a different hour, or use the morning for Itimad-ud-Daulah, the small jewel-box tomb on the east bank that most day-trippers miss. Add the Mughal-era gardens along the river and a proper walk through the old city: Jama Masjid, Kinari Bazaar, and the lanes behind the fort.

A third day is only worth it if you use it outside the city. Fatehpur Sikri, Akbar's abandoned capital, is about 40 km west and takes half a day with a car and driver; the Jama Masjid and Buland Darwaza there are the draw. Alternatively, drive north to Mathura and Vrindavan, the Krishna pilgrimage towns, roughly 1.5 hours each way, for temples and ghats rather than Mughal stone.

Do not add a fourth day in Agra itself. The city runs out of headline sights, and the time is better spent in Jaipur, Varanasi or Delhi. If you are on the standard Golden Triangle, one night in Agra is what the route assumes.

Agra is cheap by Western standards except for the Taj ticket, which is priced for foreign visitors. Budget for transport, tickets and a hotel night; food is inexpensive. Prices below are 2026 estimates and change with the season and the operator.

Buy Taj tickets online in advance and print or save the QR code. Carry your passport, since the foreign-visitor ticket is checked against ID. Arrive at the east or west gate before opening if you want the first light.

The Taj Mahal is closed to all visitors on Fridays. Many travellers build the week around this without noticing, then lose the sunrise slot. Fatehpur Sikri and the other sights stay open.

Dress for modesty at religious sites and expect to remove shoes at mosques and some tombs; socks help on hot stone. In summer, plan outdoor sightseeing before 10am and after 4pm, and carry water.

Ignore unsolicited guides and gem or marble shop pitches near the gates; agree any auto fare before you get in, or use an app. The area right around the Taj is a vehicle-free zone, so the last stretch is on foot or by electric shuttle.
