Getting around Agra: public transport, passes and taxis

Agra's sights sit in two clusters: the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort on the Yamuna's south bank, and Fatehpur Sikri about 40 km west. Distances inside the city are short — most trips are 3–8 km — but traffic and the restricted zone around the Taj make journey times longer than the map suggests.

Pick by trip shape rather than by mode: one full day of monuments suits a car with driver, while a stay of several days is cheaper with app autos and the odd walk.

A car with driver is the standard way to cover the Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and a viewpoint such as Mehtab Bagh in one day, and it is the only comfortable way to add Fatehpur Sikri. Expect ₹3,500–5,500 a day including driver, fuel and tolls, in line with the rest of India. Agree before you start whether parking, the driver's night allowance and any state border taxes are included.

Drivers commonly earn commission at shops, craft workshops and restaurants, which is why itineraries sometimes detour. Say plainly that you do not want shopping stops, or name the ones you do want. For a half day — Taj at sunrise, back by lunch — negotiate a lower rate rather than paying the full-day price.

Book through your hotel or a licensed operator rather than a driver who approaches you at the station. If you hire for the Delhi–Agra leg, the same car can usually stay with you in Agra for a day rate.

Uber and Ola both operate in Agra, and app autos and Rapido bikes are usually the cheapest way to move one or two people. Fares run about ₹50–200 for short hops and ₹150–400 for 10 km. Drivers may cancel, ask you to pay cash, or message to renegotiate the fare; confirm the plate number before getting in and keep the app's fare as your reference.

Street auto-rickshaws are everywhere and unmetered in Agra, so agree the fare before you sit down. A short ride inside the city is normally ₹50–200. Expect a higher opening quote from stands at the Taj gates and Agra Cantt station; walk a block away and the price drops.

Pre-paid taxi counters at the railway station and airport give a fixed price to your hotel, which is useful on arrival with luggage. For departures, leave a buffer: the road past the Taj east gate can be gridlocked in the late afternoon.

Agra City Transport buses are the cheapest way to cross town, with fares of roughly ₹10–30, but routes are aimed at residents, signage is limited and buses are crowded at peak hours. They are a reasonable choice if you are staying away from the centre and have time; they are not a sightseeing tool.

Around the Taj Mahal, fuel vehicles are kept out of the immediate zone. Cars and autos drop you at designated parking, and the last stretch is on foot or by electric shuttle. Walking is often faster than waiting in the vehicle queue, and the walk from the east gate parking to the ticket area takes about 10–15 minutes. Wear shoes you can remove or carry shoe covers, since footwear is not allowed on the main marble platform.

For Fatehpur Sikri, about 40 km away, there is no convenient public transport for visitors; a car with driver or a shared taxi arranged through your hotel is the practical option. Allow half a day including the drive.

These are 2026 estimates in rupees; the site converts them to your currency. Two people sharing a car pay less per head than two people taking separate autos all day, and a family of four almost always saves with a car.

Start the Taj Mahal at sunrise: traffic is light, the light is best and the parking areas are empty. By mid-morning the east gate road fills with buses.

Carry small notes. Drivers and auto wallahs rarely have change for ₹500, and app drivers may ask for cash when the network drops.

Fridays close the Taj Mahal, so plan that day for Agra Fort, Itimad-ud-Daulah, Mehtab Bagh or a Mathura and Vrindavan day trip. Museums in the region often close on Mondays.

Download an offline map and an eSIM before you arrive; mobile data in the monument zone can be patchy, and you will want the app fare visible when negotiating.

If you are combining cities, the Delhi–Agra chair-car trains take about 1 h 40–2 h and cost ₹800–2,500, which is usually faster and cheaper than driving.
