How to choose your dates
Start with the region, not the date. If your list is Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, aim for October to March and accept that December and January mornings can be fogged in, with trains and flights delayed. If it is Kerala and Tamil Nadu, split them: Kerala is best December to February and wet in June and July, while Tamil Nadu's east coast is wet and cyclone-prone October to December and easiest in January and February.
Book trains and internal flights as soon as your dates are fixed, especially for the December–January peak and for Ladakh in July and August. If your dates are flexible and cost matters more than perfect weather, April to September is the cheap window almost everywhere except Ladakh.

Notes and caveats
Heat is the main risk from April to June on the plains: plan sightseeing for early morning and evening, carry water and electrolytes, and treat 40 °C+ afternoons as indoor time. In the monsoon, landslides can close hill roads in July and August, and standing water brings mosquito-borne illness; check local conditions before travelling to the hills.
