Agra is compact: the Taj Mahal sits on the south bank of the Yamuna, the Fort and the main railway station are 3–5 km north, and the airport is about 13 km west. Where you sleep mostly decides whether you walk to the monument at dawn or sit in traffic first.
Taj Ganj is the old quarter pressed against the Taj's south gate. Rooms are cheap, the walk is short, and touts and rickshaw drivers are part of the deal. Fatehabad Road runs east of the monument with the widest choice of mid-range and upscale hotels, restaurants and pools. Detail by area
Taj Ganj: the closest you can sleep to the monument. Guesthouses on the rooftops advertise Taj views, and some do have them, but the view is often partial or over a neighbouring roof — ask for a photo of the actual room's outlook. Streets are narrow, so cars cannot always reach the door; you may walk the last 100–200 m with your bag. It is the right base if your plan is a sunrise entry and you want to be back in bed by 9am.
Fatehabad Road: a straight run of hotels from about 2 km east of the Taj towards the city. This is where most mid-range chains, pool hotels and tour-group properties sit. You trade the walk for quiet, parking, a proper breakfast and easier evenings. Autos to the Taj take 10–20 minutes depending on traffic and cost roughly ₹100–200 (2026 estimate).
Sadar Bazaar and Agra Cantt: the everyday city. Cheap vegetarian restaurants, sweet shops, a market, and the main station for trains to Delhi, Jaipur and Varanasi. Good if you arrive late or leave early by train, less good if you want to be at the Taj before sunrise.
Tajganj East: the east gate road has smaller guesthouses and a calmer approach than the south gate. It suits travellers who want to walk in but not sleep in the middle of the souvenir crush.
