Winterswijk is a small market town in the far east of the Achterhoek, about 1 h from Arnhem or Zutphen by train, and the last stop before Germany. Its pull is quiet: Piet Mondriaan's childhood home is now a museum, the market square holds a 13th-century church, and the flat farmland around it is best seen by bike. The one thing people travel for is the limestone quarry, open to visitors only a few days a year.

Safety

A quiet, low-risk town. The real issues are thin rural bus service, unlit bike paths after dark and wet cobbles on the Markt: take lights, and do not count on a late bus home.
  • The Jacobskerk is closed from Oct 2025 for renovation: check before you plan around it.
  • The quarry opens to visitors only a few days a year, by registration, and fills fast.
  • Buses outside town run a few times a day at best; do not rely on them for a tight schedule.
  • Cross-border buses to Germany run Monday–Saturday only, and groups of more than five must reserve ahead.
