Lochem is a 34,000-person town in the Achterhoek, the eastern Gelderland region, with a medieval street plan, a church from around 900 and the Lochemse Berg, one of the higher points of the area at about 49.5 m. It works as a quiet one-night stop on the Zutphen–Enschede rail line or as a walking base; the station sits north of the Twentekanaal, a 15–20 minute walk from the Markt, which surprises people arriving by train.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk. Regional buses (line 52 toward Deventer and Borculo) stop at the station. Trains run on the Zutphen–Hengelo–Enschede line. For Huis Verwolde, the Lochemse Berg and Barchem you want a bike or a car; local rental options are limited, so ask at the VVV on Markt.

Safety

Lochem is a low-risk small town; the real issues are wet, unlit country roads, bikes without lights and quiet streets after the kitchens close around 21:00.
  • The station is outside the centre, north of the Twentekanaal: allow 15–20 minutes on foot or take a bus.
  • Huis Verwolde opens roughly Easter to October, 12:00–17:00; outside that window the house is closed (check).
  • Small-town kitchens close early; after about 21:00 your options are limited.
  • Country roads around Lochem have no separate bike path in places; use lights after dark.
