The trips in detail
Trakai is the one to do first. The island castle sits on Lake Galvė, the village has a small Karaim community with its own wooden houses and a distinctive cuisine, and the whole place is walkable from the station. Trains and buses run through the day; a half-day is enough, a full day if you add a lake boat or the peninsula castle.
Kaunas rewards a full day: the interwar modernist centre, the Ninth Fort, Sugihara House and street art. Trains are frequent and comfortable, and the station is a short walk from the old town. If you like it, stay a night instead of rushing back.
The Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage site near Šiauliai, roughly 2.5–3 hours each way. It is a long day by public transport because you still need a local bus or taxi from Šiauliai. A car makes it much easier, and it pairs well with an overnight in Šiauliai.
Druskininkai is a spa town with mineral water, a water park and the Grūtas Soviet sculpture park nearby. Buses run from Vilnius, but the last stretch to Grūtas needs a car or taxi. Aukštaitija National Park, north of Vilnius, is lake and canoe country and really needs a car and ideally an overnight.
Paneriai, on the city edge, is a memorial in the forest and works as a short half-day trip rather than a full excursion.
What it costs
Public transport is the cheap option: regional trains and buses to Trakai and Kaunas cost a few euros each way, and the Hill of Crosses is the only one where the total climbs because of the local leg from Šiauliai. Car rental plus fuel is usually more expensive for one person but cheaper for a group of three or four, and it opens up Druskininkai, Grūtas and Aukštaitija.
Add entry fees for the Trakai castle, the Ninth Fort, Grūtas park and the Druskininkai water park; these are modest but vary, so check before you go. Food and drink are cheaper outside Vilnius.
