Best time to visit Lithuania: weather and seasons by month

The table below is the short version: what each month is actually like, how busy it is and whether prices are low, medium or high. Use it to pick a window, then check the detail sections for the coast and for holidays that move hotel prices.

Lithuania is small, but the coast behaves differently from the inland cities. Vilnius and the east are continental: winter around −4 °C with snow, summer 22–25 °C, and September often settled and golden. Central Lithuania — Kaunas, Šiauliai, Birštonas — runs similar but slightly milder.

The coast and the Curonian Spit are windier and milder in winter, and cooler in summer. The sea only warms to 18–20 °C in July and August, and Nida largely shuts outside the season, so a spit trip outside those two months means fewer services. Inland lakes and Trakai work from May, when the water is still cold but the days are long.

Prices track the season: January to April and November are the low band, May, June, September and December sit in the middle, and July and August are the high band, especially on the coast. Book Nida accommodation months ahead for July or August; the spit has limited beds and a short season.

Public holidays move demand more than the weather does. The Kaziukas craft fair in early March fills Vilnius hotels, and 11 March brings parades and concerts. Joninės on 24 June empties the cities and fills the countryside around bonfire sites such as Kernavė. Christmas, 24–26 December, brings closures and the Kūčios dinner on Christmas Eve. On 1–2 November, cemeteries fill with candles and traffic is heavy.

Spring and early summer suit city trips: Vilnius for the Old Town and Užupis, Kaunas for Modernism and memory sites, and Trakai for the island castle as a day trip. Late September is the sweet spot for the same itinerary with fewer people and lower prices.

High summer is for the coast: Klaipėda, Palanga and the Curonian Spit, with the dunes and lagoon at Nida. Winter is a Vilnius city break — the Christmas tree and market on Cathedral Square in December, snow in the Old Town in January and February. Shoulder months are for museums, spa towns such as Druskininkai and Birštonas, and cheap hotel rates.

Lithuania uses the euro, and cards work almost everywhere in cities; carry a little cash for small stalls and rural buses. Summer days are long, with light well into the evening in June, while December daylight is short — plan indoor sights for the afternoon.

Layers work better than one heavy coat in spring and autumn, and waterproof shoes matter on the coast whatever the month. If your dates are flexible, compare a few weeks rather than a single month: late May and late September often beat the peak weeks on both weather and price.
