Where to stay in Vilnius: best neighborhoods and hotels

For a first trip, base yourself in Senamiestis, the Old Town. Cathedral Square, Gediminas Tower, Pilies street and Užupis are within walking distance of most addresses, and the airport bus drops you within a few blocks. Rooms cost more here than anywhere else in the city, so if price is the deciding factor, look at Naujamiestis around the bus and train stations, which is a walk of roughly 15–25 minutes to the Old Town and generally cheaper.

Two other options change the decision. Užupis, the small district across the Vilnia river, is central but quieter and suits light sleepers and longer stays. Šnipiškės, north of the river, has the newer business hotels and shopping centres, with a walk or short trolleybus ride to the Old Town. If you are in Vilnius for one night before a train to Kaunas or a bus to Trakai, stay near the station in Naujamiestis and skip the Old Town premium.

Senamiestis is the UNESCO-listed core: cobbled lanes, church towers, the Presidential Palace and the university courtyards. It is the obvious choice and the most expensive one. Streets closest to Pilies and Vokiečių carry the bar traffic, so ask for a room facing a courtyard or a back street if you sleep lightly. Apartments here often beat hotels on space for the same money, but check whether the building has a lift — many Old Town buildings do not.

Užupis sits just across the river and feels like a village inside the city, with the self-declared republic's own constitution on a wall on Paupio street. It is a short walk from Cathedral Square, quieter at night, and has a growing cluster of small hotels and apartments. It suits travellers staying four nights or more who want to come home to calm.

Naujamiestis, the 19th-century grid south of the Old Town, is where the bus and train stations are. It is not pretty in the postcard sense, but it is practical: cheaper rooms, easy luggage movement, direct trains to the airport and to Kaunas, and a walk of roughly 15–25 minutes to the Old Town. Good for early departures, late arrivals and budget travellers.

Šnipiškės, north of the river, mixes glass office towers with wooden houses. The big chain and business hotels are here, along with the main shopping centres, and parking is far easier than in the Old Town. You trade a longer walk for lower prices and newer rooms. Žvėrynas, west of the centre across the river, is leafy and residential, best if you have a car or do not mind a longer walk.

Vilnius is cheaper than Western European capitals but no longer a bargain basement. In 2026, expect roughly 70–140 EUR for a double room in a mid-range Old Town hotel in summer, 45–90 EUR in Naujamiestis, and 18–35 EUR for a dorm bed in a hostel. Apartments for two often land between the two, around 55–110 EUR. Winter rates outside the Christmas market weeks can fall by a third or more. These are estimates — check live rates before booking.

Add any city tourist tax your accommodation charges, and check whether breakfast is included — many mid-range places charge separately. Paying in euros is standard; cards are accepted almost everywhere, but small guesthouses may prefer cash.

Book early for June to August and for the Christmas market period in December, when the Old Town fills and prices rise. Outside those windows you can often decide a few days ahead.

Ask about the lift and about street noise before you book. Old Town buildings are historic, which means narrow staircases, thick walls and, on the bar streets, late noise. A courtyard-facing room solves most of it.

If you plan day trips, the bus and train stations in Naujamiestis are the departure points for Trakai and Kaunas, which is another argument for that area if you are moving often. For a settled sightseeing trip, the Old Town wins.
