Vietnam in October: what to expect

Vietnam in October is three different countries. The north has just come out of its storm season and is entering its best stretch: Hanoi and Hạ Long are cooler and drier, and Sa Pa's rice terraces are turning gold before the cold arrives. Expect pleasant days and a light jacket for evenings, especially in the mountains.

The centre is the opposite. The monsoon that runs from September to February is at its worst in October and November, and Hội An's old town floods in most Octobers. Huế and Đà Nẵng see heavy rain and the tail of the typhoon season. If the centre is your priority, this is the month to avoid or to book with flexible dates.

The south stays hot all year and October sits inside the May–November wet season: a heavy afternoon downpour of one to two hours, then sun again. It rarely costs you a whole day, but Phú Quốc and the Mekong are at their wettest.

October is one of the quietest months in Vietnam. The domestic summer holiday is over, Tết is months away, and the weather warnings keep the centre thin. That means low-season room rates in Hanoi, Hạ Long and Sa Pa, easier seats on trains and buses, and no queue at the main sights.

The trade-off is the centre: some Hội An and Huế hotels and tours cut services or close in the flood months, and boat trips on Hạ Long can still be cancelled if a late storm warning is issued. Book the north with confidence; book the centre only with free cancellation.

October has no national public holiday, so the month is about local festivals rather than nationwide closures. The Mid-Autumn Festival falls on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month — mid-September to early October — and its lantern evenings spill into the start of the month in Hanoi's Old Quarter and Hội An. It is not a day off, so shops and transport run normally.

Elsewhere, expect temple festivals and harvest celebrations in the north and the Mekong Delta; dates are set locally and change yearly. Check with the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism or your hotel for what is on during your dates.

Build the trip around the north. Hanoi is comfortable for walking the Old Quarter, Hạ Long Bay cruises are running again after the summer storm season, Ninh Bình's river and cave country is green and quiet, and Sa Pa and Hà Giang are clear enough for the mountain roads and terraces. This is the single best month for that half of the country.

In the south, Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta and Côn Đảo work if you plan around afternoon rain: sightsee in the morning, keep a café or museum for the downpour. Phú Quốc is the weakest pick — it is still in its wettest stretch.

For the centre, either skip it or keep dates loose. If you go anyway, Quy Nhơn and the southern part of the central coast are usually drier than Huế and Hội An, and Đà Nẵng can give you a dry morning between fronts.

Pack for two climates if you are covering the north and south. For the north and the mountains: a light jacket or fleece for evenings, long trousers for Sa Pa and Hà Giang nights, and shoes with grip for wet terraces. For the south and the centre: quick-dry clothing, a compact umbrella or rain shell, and a dry bag for phone and camera.

September is the transition: the north is still storm-prone early on and improves late in the month, while the centre's monsoon is just starting. November flips the picture — the north and the far south are good, but the central flood peak makes Hội An an even bigger gamble than October. December is the first month that works well in both the north and the south, at Christmas prices.

If your dates are fixed and the centre is essential, aim for February to April instead: that is the best compromise for a north-to-south trip.
