Crowds and prices
December is the second-busiest month of the Vietnamese year after Tet. The first three weeks are moderate; from about 20 December the Christmas–New Year window fills Phu Quoc, Da Nang, Hoi An and Ha Long Bay, and resort rates roughly double against November. Domestic travel is lighter than at Tet, so trains and internal flights stay bookable, but the popular holiday dates sell out weeks ahead.
Book long-distance transport and any beach hotel for 24 December – 2 January at least a month out. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City hotels absorb the surge better than the coast, and the north's cool weather keeps Sa Pa and Ha Giang quieter than the beaches.

What's on in December
Vietnam has no public holiday in December apart from New Year's Day on 1 January, which falls just outside the month. Christmas is a working day, but it is widely celebrated in the cities: hotels and shopping streets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City put up lights and trees, and Catholic areas such as Ho Chi Minh City's churches and Phat Diem hold midnight services on 24 December. Expect restaurant set menus and higher prices on 24–25 December rather than closures.
New Year's Eve brings countdown events in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem area and central Ho Chi Minh City, with fireworks in some years — check locally. Offices close on 1 January; tourist services stay open.

Where to go in December
Build the trip around the dry zones. In the north, Hanoi is comfortable for walking, Ninh Binh and Ha Long Bay work for day trips and overnight cruises, and Sa Pa and Ha Giang suit trekkers who bring warm layers. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City, the Mekong Delta around Can Tho and the beaches of Phu Quoc and Con Dao are at their best. Da Lat is cool and clear, a good counterpoint to the hot lowlands.
Treat the central coast as optional. If you want Hoi An or Hue, keep dates loose and hold a backup plan; Quy Nhon often dries out late in the month. A workable 12–14 day shape is Hanoi and the north for four or five nights, a flight south, then Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong or Phu Quoc.

What to pack
Pack for two climates if you are covering north and south. The north needs a light jacket, a warm mid-layer for Sa Pa and Ha Giang, and shoes that cope with damp pavements. The south needs hot-weather clothes, sun protection and mosquito repellent for the Mekong. Add a compact rain shell if the centre is on your list, and a swimsuit for Phu Quoc or Con Dao.
