Vidzeme is Latvia's castle-and-river region, wrapped around Gauja National Park. Cēsis and Sigulda hold the restored castles, the old towns and the walking trails, and both sit on the Riga–Valga rail line, so you can sleep in one and reach the other by train in about 45 minutes. Everything east of Valmiera — Madona, Gulbene, Alūksne, the Gaiziņkalns hills — is car country: buses run but slowly, and the last useful departures are early evening.
