Vantaa is Finland's fourth-largest city and the municipality that contains Helsinki Airport, but it has no single centre: Tikkurila in the east and Myyrmäki in the west act as local hubs, with the airport and its Aviapolis business district between them. Almost everything worth seeing is a museum, a church or an outdoor area, and the ring rail ties the pieces together. Most travellers use it as an airport bed, not as a destination.

Getting around

HSL tickets cover Vantaa, Helsinki and Espoo on the same card or app; the zones you need depend on your route, so check the fare in the HSL journey planner before you buy. The ring rail (P and I) links Myyrmäki, the airport, Aviapolis and Tikkurila; buses fill the gaps but the network is a maze, so plan each trip in the journey planner. City bikes and rental e-scooters run in Tikkurila, Myyrmäki and Martinlaakso in the warm months. Driving helps for the spread-out western and northern districts, but Kehä III jams at rush hour and snow can stop it.

Watch out

Safety

Vantaa is a low-crime Helsinki suburb; the real risks are winter ice on pavements, unlit paths after dark and the cost of a taxi when the last train has gone.
  • There is no city centre: check which district your hotel is in before booking, or you may add a 30-min bus to every trip.
  • Airport-area hotels are not all walkable to the terminal; confirm the shuttle before you book a 06:00 flight.
  • Winter pavements and cycle paths ice over; e-scooters are not safe on them.
  • Museum hours are short outside summer and several sights close on Mondays: check each site the week you go.
  • Taxis are licensed and metered; app fares vary by company, so compare before ordering.
