Porvoo is Finland's second-oldest town, 50 km east of Helsinki, and the country's most popular day trip. The wooden Old Town sits above the Porvoo River, compact enough to walk in two hours. Buses run every 15–30 minutes from Helsinki, so most travellers come and go in a day; a single night buys you empty cobbled lanes at dusk and dawn.

Getting around

Walk. The Old Town is pedestrianised and compact; cobbles are uneven and hilly, so leave strollers behind. Local buses and a dial-a-ride village service cover the outskirts; a bike-share system (Donkey Republic app) has stations around town.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe. The real risks are uneven cobbles, winter ice on the slopes, and summer crowds on the narrow lanes; nothing here needs more than ordinary care.
  • The red riverside warehouses are private homes: view them from the far bank, do not cross onto the property.
  • Many Old Town shops and the Doll and Toy Museum open only in summer; check before a winter trip.
  • No regular passenger trains run to Porvoo; the museum railway is occasional and cash only.
  • Cobblestones and hills in the Old Town: hard going with a stroller or heavy suitcase.
