Lohja is a small lakeside town 50 km west of Helsinki, reached by frequent coach in about an hour. Its draw is narrow and real: a 15th-century grey-stone church, a guided tour 100 m down a working limestone mine, the biggest lake in Uusimaa, and a strict nature reserve with Finland's largest limestone cave. Apples and limestone are the town's symbols, and the market has traded here since the Middle Ages. It is a day trip or a single quiet night, not a base.

Getting around

The centre is small enough to walk: bus station, market, Lohjantähti and the church sit within about 15 minutes on foot. Local buses and the on-call service lines cover the villages and the hospital, and the mine is a short bus ride from the centre. For Karkali, Karjalohja, Sammatti and the churches, a car is far easier than the few daily coaches; bikes work in summer.

Watch out

Safety

Lohja is a low-risk small town; the real hazards are dark, icy pavements in winter, cold water on the lake, and the last bus leaving before you do. Emergency 112.
  • The mine is guided-tour only and tours in languages other than Finnish must be booked ahead: no booking, no descent.
  • Karkali is a strict nature reserve: stay on marked trails, and do not enter Torhola cave in late autumn or winter because bats overwinter there.
  • Village churches and the mine keep limited seasonal hours: check the official pages before you travel out.
  • Outside the centre, buses run a few times a day at best; a missed last coach means a taxi or an unplanned night.
