  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Vancouver packs ocean, beaches and North Shore mountains into one compact downtown peninsula, so most of a short trip is walkable or a 25-minute SkyTrain ride from the airport. Three nights covers the core; add nights for Whistler, Victoria or the Rockies leg. Rain is the main planning risk from October to March.

Arrive & move

Airports are listed under At a glance; this is how to move once you are in

Getting around

SkyTrain (Canada Line, Expo Line, Millennium Line), SeaBus and buses run on one fare system; tap a Compass Card or contactless card. Downtown is walkable and the Seawall is the best route between Stanley Park, Coal Harbour and False Creek. Aquabus and False Creek Ferries link Granville Island and Yaletown. A car is a liability downtown; rent one only for the mountains or the Rockies.

See & do

Day-trips, door to door

Day-trips

Door-to-door, not ride time

Whistler

overnight

Door to door: About 2–2.5 h

Sea-to-Sky Highway by car or scheduled coach, about 2 h each way

A long return day; sleep one night if you want the gondola and the village.

Victoria and Vancouver Island

overnight

Door to door: 3.5–4.5 h

SkyTrain to Bridgeport, bus to Tsawwassen, BC Ferries to Swartz Bay, then bus to Victoria

Ferry plus transfers eat the day; two nights makes it worthwhile.

Squamish and the Sea-to-Sky gondola

go

Door to door: About 1–1.25 h

Car or coach on Highway 99, about 1 h

Good half-day with a car; combine with Shannon Falls.

Steveston Village, Richmond

go

Door to door: About 1 h

Canada Line to Richmond-Brighouse, then bus, about 1 h

Harbour, fish and chips and a flat walk; easy without a car.

Bowen Island

go

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Bus to Horseshoe Bay, then BC Ferries, about 20 min crossing

Short ferry, quiet trails; check the return sailing before you go.

Eat & sleep

Which area to sleep in

Where to sleep

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

City Centre (downtown)

Best first base: walkable to the Seawall, shopping and SkyTrain; the priciest area.

West End

Quieter residential streets next to Stanley Park and English Bay beaches; good for couples and longer stays.

Gastown-Chinatown

Heritage blocks, bars and cheap eats; some streets east of Chinatown are rough at night.

Yaletown-False Creek

Modern waterfront condos, restaurants and the stadium district; easy Aquabus and SkyTrain access.

UBC-Point Grey

Campus museums and the big western beaches; 30–40 min by bus from downtown, cheaper rooms.

Watch out

Safety

Vancouver is generally safe for visitors; the real issues are petty theft from cars and bikes, rain-related planning, and the Downtown Eastside around Main and Hastings, which is best crossed in daylight and not lingered in.
  • Rain from October to March is frequent and can last days: pack a waterproof shell, not an umbrella you will lose.
  • The Downtown Eastside around Main and Hastings has open drug use and street disorder; walk through in daylight, do not linger.
  • Some Gastown and Granville Street bars add cover charges or unposted minimums: ask the total before you sit.
  • Summer weekends fill Stanley Park, Granville Island and the Grouse Mountain gondola: go before 10:00 or after 16:00.
  • Parking downtown is expensive and scarce; use transit and the park-and-ride lots instead.

What this guide covers so far, and its sources

Not a trip line yet

This is a basic guide: no airport-to-bed contract, walking clusters or day plans are published for Vancouver. Airport, fare and schedule details are unverified; check the operators before you fly.

What we know, and what is coming

On this page

  1. Best months: Jun–Sep (long, dry, mild days); late Mar–May and Sep–Oct for fewer crowds · avoid Nov–Feb (frequent rain, short daylight); late Jul–Aug if you dislike heat and peak prices · month by month →
  2. 3 airports and 5 areas to sleep in
  3. Weather: a 7-day forecast and monthly averages
  4. Cost per day in 3 bands
  5. 5 day-trips, door to door
  6. 5 things to watch out for, with emergency numbers

Coming as the guide grows

  1. Airport-to-bed contract for YVR: last Canada Line departures, taxi zone fares, overnight rung.
  2. Four walking clusters with rescue anchors: City Centre, West End and Stanley Park, Gastown-Chinatown, Yaletown-False Creek.
  3. Place pages with verified cutoffs (Stanley Park, Granville Island, Grouse Mountain, Museum of Anthropology) and eat pages with last orders.
  4. Rain and cruise-ship arrival fixtures so gates A–D can go green.
