Vancouver packs ocean, beaches and North Shore mountains into one compact downtown peninsula, so most of a short trip is walkable or a 25-minute SkyTrain ride from the airport. Three nights covers the core; add nights for Whistler, Victoria or the Rockies leg. Rain is the main planning risk from October to March.

Get around
SkyTrain (Canada Line, Expo Line, Millennium Line), SeaBus and buses run on one fare system; tap a Compass Card or contactless card. Downtown is walkable and the Seawall is the best route between Stanley Park, Coal Harbour and False Creek. Aquabus and False Creek Ferries link Granville Island and Yaletown. A car is a liability downtown; rent one only for the mountains or the Rockies.

Scams and watch-outs
- Rain from October to March is frequent and can last days: pack a waterproof shell, not an umbrella you will lose.
- The Downtown Eastside around Main and Hastings has open drug use and street disorder; walk through in daylight, do not linger.
- Some Gastown and Granville Street bars add cover charges or unposted minimums: ask the total before you sit.
- Summer weekends fill Stanley Park, Granville Island and the Grouse Mountain gondola: go before 10:00 or after 16:00.
- Parking downtown is expensive and scarce; use transit and the park-and-ride lots instead.
Vancouver is generally safe for visitors; the real issues are petty theft from cars and bikes, rain-related planning, and the Downtown Eastside around Main and Hastings, which is best crossed in daylight and not lingered in.
