Utö is Finland's southernmost inhabited island, about 80 km out in the Archipelago Sea on the fairway to Turku. A few dozen people live here year-round; the lighthouse dates to 1814 and the old pilot station is now a hotel. There is no wood, no farmland and no private cars — you walk the 81 hectares. This is a place for wind, birds, wrecks and quiet, not for a checklist of sights.

Getting around

On foot. The island is about 81 ha and private cars are not allowed. Rowing boats can be hired. The west part of the island and a small area around the monitoring tower near the chapel are closed military areas — stay on the roads and watch your step off them, as there are old trenches and emplacements.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe for tourists: the real risks are weather, the sea and the ferry timetable. Tell someone your plan if you go out on the rocks or dive, and keep off the closed military areas.
  • The ferry is the only practical way in and out: miss it and you stay another night.
  • No public parking on Utö — leave the car at Pärnäs.
  • West island and the area near the monitoring tower are closed military zones.
  • Off-road ground hides old military constructions; watch your steps.
  • Wind and damp make the temperature feel colder than the forecast.
